How many size must have our Swap partition?

Hey, i’m back of holidays!

The size of the Swap partition has always been reason of many discussions in the Linux users. Some people says that the properly size it’s twice of our RAM size.

In this link http://etbe.coker.com.au/2007/09/28/swap-space/ , a guy wrote that the properly Swap size partitions should be:

  • Equal the size of RAM, if your RAM is less than 1G
  • Half the size of RAM for RAM sizes from 2G to 4G.
  • More than 4G of RAM, you need 2G of Swap.

  1. I read many books on this topic, so I really think every UNIX and Oracle administrator should consider the following:

    Currently, the maximum size of a swap partition is architecture-dependent. For i386, m68k, ARM and PowerPC, it is “officially” 2Gb. It is 128Gb on alpha, 1Gb on sparc, and 3Tb on sparc64. An opteron on the 2.6 kernel can write to a 16 Tb swap partition. For linux kernels 2.1 and earlier, the limit is 128Mb. The partition may be larger than 128 MB, but excess space is never used. If you want more than 128 MB of swap for a 2.1 and earlier kernel, you have to create multiple swap partitions (8 max). After 2.4, 32 swap areas are “officially” possible. See setting up swap for details.

    I got some answer and i worked its mandatory when u installed at the time we must be necessary to give the size of Swap memory should be just double of RAM size..
    eg: suppose ram size 2gb means swap memory size should be 4gb.
